This experience was disappointing as the chances for a future visit to the area are slim as I was attending a conference in Newport. In bold print: NOTE: Please keep in mind when planning your visit that background checks can take up to 5 days to process. Once the Background Check is complete the Pass Office will issue a day pass for your visit. Museum will email the Pass Office with your information authorizing checks to be conducted (A Background Check is needed for everyone 16 years of age or older.) Call the museum to arrange a day and time of your visit at (401)841-2101 or (401) 841-7276, (My note: not sure how that works for a rental car.) Valid vehicle registration and active insurance are required for each vehicle entering the base. 2 forms of valid state or federal identification is required for base access once background checks are complete. She handed me a piece of paper and said she didn't know if they could process the request in that time but to give it a try. She then asked how long I was in town for and I told her through Friday morning (this was on Wednesday morning). When I was called to the window I explained that the sentry had said I needed to come up here to get a pass to visit the museum. I went to the Pass Office and waited in line for about 10 minutes. He was courteous and assisted me in making a U-turn. He then proceeded to call in my driver's license information and my rental car license plate to somebody. He told me that I would have to go to the Pass Office and it would take only about 5 minutes to get me a pass. He asked if I was active or former military to which I replied I was not. Drove up to the sentry and handed my driver's license and said I wanted to visit the museum. Didn't see the response to another poster a couple of months ago until just now, but my experience was different.
